Complete Guide to the Spade Pirates

Given how there’s a break this week, I thought of tackling the Spade Pirates, since the newly released novel gave us a ton of new information. Keep in mind, this is all canon!

Additionally, here’s the other two new characters from the novel:

Thankfully someone lent me their computer to make this and hopefully my new one should be arriving in a few days. See you then!

Chapter Secrets 77 – Chapter 877

Recently tried out Treasure Cruise, incredibly solid for a free-to-play game! Now if I could just get a Monet roll…

Sai is finally back in Kano! Since Kano is in the West Blue, it means somehow Sai managed to leave the Grand Line.

We also have the manga debut of Uholicia, Sai’s fiancee, who was first introduced in Vol 77’s SBS:

The name Uholicia is based on the common female suffix -licia (Felicia, etc.) but replaced with Uho, the Japanese onomatopoeia for a Gorilla’s grunt. She’s also the leader of the Niho fleet, which is in turn a pun on hers and Sai’s marriage (Happo – 8, Niho – 2, 8 + 2 = 10).

Now, let’s have a word about the Kano kingdom’s inspirations. On one hand, it’s true that there are some Korean elements, like the turtle ships, but everything else appears to have a strong Chinese inspiration. For example, Uholicia’s dress is clearly based on a traditional Chinese one,

much more than a Korean one and the same applies to the servant/aide/minister from chapter 823, not to mention that the rock spires surrounding the kingdom are reminiscent of the famous spiked peaks of China.

The architecture could be any of the two really, but the large building is more reminiscent of Chinese temples than Korean ones.

To me Kano seems like a bit of a mixture between the two cultures, but let’s see if Oda shows us more of it in the future.

And hey, you can see Chinjao with his twisted drill in the corner! Is he ever gonna get that fixed?

Perospero makes a pun here, since in Japanese calling someone sweet (amai) can be intended as them being naive.

I’ll tell you this much, at least Perospero sure has courage to be so close to mama in this case.

Big Mom’s attack is so strong even the Sunny trembles!

I love this juxtaposition, Katakuri claims Luffy is a monster, but Luffy’s panel depicts him derpily with his tongue sticking out. Classic Oda!

Candy Maiden is obviously based on the torture machine, the iron maiden, a big metal cage with spikes made to encase victims like a sarcophagus. The nails would specifically avoid most vital spots, making the death long and painful. That said, contrary to popular belief, the iron maiden was never intended as an instrument of torture according to the majority of historians, but was instead used for exhibition as a work of art in torture museums.

But look at it’s size! It’s easily 5 times taller than Jinbe, making it a whooping 10-15m tall!! And hey, in the background, you can see Perospero crafting it with his cane!

Wait… did Katakuri just… show immunity to a haki punch?!!! Is this a mistake? Red Hawk is a haki-imbued attack after all. Actually… I’d say this might be Haki immunity after all. Hear me out: this is something we haven seen before: in chapter 574, we saw Marco and Vista cut through Akainu’s jaw, using Haki, but it reformed afterwards with no problem.

The same could be applied to Aokiji and Kizaru tanking other attacks in Marineford from Whitebeard and such. Could it be that only the strongest logia/logia-like users in the world have developed an immunity to haki? Is this what Oda means by “Special Paramecia”? After all, this wouldn’t be the first time Oda introduced something like this early on (for example, Awakening, etc.).

Did… did Pedro just tease the Dawn again?!! This is big!! And it all aligns perfectly with my research! You see, I had already predicted that the Dawn was not just Pedro’s belief, but a legend handed down by the Mink clan. The reason for that is that Pedro wasn’t the first to mention it, but instead it was… Nekomamushi!

This led me to believe as such, that it is something passed down by the Kozuki clan to the minks, which was right! I’ll expand more on it in The True History, so please look forward to that!

Going back to little details, Katakuri traps Luffy by using his mochi:

So about Pedro’s “death”: I think that, regardless of the outcome, this can’t be good. Let’s say that:

  • Option 1 – fake death: this would be Oda screwing with death and pulling a Baum again, which really doesn’t help the story
  • Option 2 – Pedro actually dies: this could be even worse since, after going through hundreds of comments, I only found a few that really bought into this. So if Pedro dies for real, it’s going to be very anticlimactic. This is the issue with the boy who cried wolf, if you continue abusing of fake deaths, it’s hard for readers to believe you once someone really dies. Just ask Mashima about that

But hey, one final detail: you can see Big Mom being blown away by the blast!

And what a blast too I might add, it towers over Big Mom!
> Pedro kills himself in an explosion

> Break next weekBut hey, I’ll try to publish something during the break to alleviate the pain. And hopefully with a new computer. See you then!

Chapter Secrets 76 – Chapter 876

Hello everyone! So unfortunately, my computer kicked the bucket after 8 long years, so for the moment being I cannot edit anything until I get a new computer. However, I don’t want to leave you guys without chapter secrets this week, so I’ll try my best to do a rough version from my phone. Enjoy!
We now move onto Sai, getting a good shot of his ship, the Happosai, which is based off Chinese junks. The characters on the sails are, fittingly enough, for “Happo”.

Chinese junk:

Back in chapter 823 we heard a member of the Kano country mention that Sai wouldn’t make it in time for the Reverie. Is it too late? Will this lead to Sai going to the Reverie or will this focus on his marriage with Baby 5? (personally, I’d vouch on the latter)

Speaking of which, there they are!

You can see some sparks come out of the forest, left by Zeus’s strike. And if you look at the Sunny, you can see dust emerging from Brook and Chopper’s fighting.

Among the nameless defeated soldiers, there’s a familiar face, being Gravlax!

You can also spot several homies looking distraught at what just happened.

Jinbe and Luffy visibly feel the earth trembling because of Big Mom.

Oh my… it seems Big Mom got a new… ehm, peculiar craving fit…

Big Mom shows visible damage for the first time (excluding the knees), which, given how tough her body is meant to be, speaks volumes for Nami’s feat.

“Nope, nope, nope!!!”

For those that don’t remember, Pedro is referring to this scene from chapter 828:

Given her three-eyed biology, Pudding has heart eyes on all three eyes:

The same applies to her tears;

The onomatopoeia reads “Kyaa~”, further emphasizing Pudding’s kinder side.

Priceless reaction from our heroes.

This means that Big Mom will chase them riding Zeus, while they escape on the Sunny.
As Big Mom readies her attack, best homie readies himself too.

:O !!!

This is obvious enough, but Flashback refers to the narrative mechanic of a character recalling a past event. In this case, the flashback takes place literally, with each homie recalling their past memories.

Also, glad to see Pudding actually using her powers.

Seriously Perospero, what the hell are you doing here? You said Big Mom could kill you and yet you get right in front of her path?! This guy deserves to be killed!

Some of you probably want to know my thoughts on the Pudding shenanigans, so here we go: I don’t like it. Personally, I thought that Pudding was a fantastic character, her betrayal was painfully genius, so seeing her being relegated into a joke character feels very disappointing. It feels like Oda can’t keep the lasting consequences of an evil female villain (an issue similar to his fake deaths) and had the necessity to redeem Pudding, but to keep her in character he had to resort to this. Though don’t get me wrong, I don’t thonk this is necessarily bad writing, just a poor direction of character. A divisive topic to say the least, I’m interested on what the community will think at the end of it all!

It took Streusen three days to bake the cake, so how will they make it in such short time? (not to mention that it’s half a day of sailing to get to Cacao Island)

But by the way Sanji describes it, it seems he literally is planning to make her faint so that they can get away. Let’s get baking!

P.S.: Sorry again for this format, I’ll try to get a computer as soon as I can. Thanks for your patience!

Chapter Secrets 75 – Chapter 875

I enjoyed this chapter more than the past ones, since at least it felt more like a proper chase. Let’s see where it goes from here!

Chapter Secrets 74 – Chapter 874

Sorry for the slight delay, I was planning to do this on Thursday, but since the chapter came out late I got caught up in travelling and a lot of other things, but without further ado, let’s do this!

Join me today as we waste my night trying to find pointless renders!

Charlotte Family Tree

Charlotte Family

Based on the research from this. Keep in mind that some of these names are fanmade, not canon. Based as of chapter 873.

A Complete Guide to the Charlotte Family

Since the arc is wrapping up, I thought I would finally put down my complete list of every single Charlotte introduced so far, named and unnamed. This only applies to Charlottes however, I’ll keep the non-sibling Big Mom Pirates for another day. This list is updated as of Chapter 873.

Big Mom has married 43 husbands and has had 46 sons and 39 daughters, although 2 of those sons (Moscato and Opera) appear to have died at her hands. She has been giving birth for 42 years straight.

Charlotte Linlin

Unnamed children:

Note: The criteria for the unnamed children is relatively tough, as it’s very hard to determine which members of the crew are just part of the Big Mom pirates and which are actual siblings. Because of this I included mostly those that behaved in a group alongside the other siblings as siblings themselves, so please take this with a grain of salt.

Also, keep in mind that none of these names are canon! These are just names that I’ve given them for the moment being. I also chose some more fitting names for some of them, as some of the previous choices were… random to say the least.

Additionally, there is a Minister of Chocolate who could be a child (though it’s not a given), plus a group of decuplets, 5 male and 5 female, that are all 18. Given their ages, it’s almost confirmed that the 5 females are the 30th, 31st, 32nd, 33rd and 34th daughters, as it’s unlikely Pudding is that much younger than that.

These are all the characters that at least appeared to be part of the family. I’ll try to do a list of the named and unnamed members of Big Mom’s crew soon enough. See you then!

Chapter Secrets 73 – Chapter 873

Bit torn on this chapter, it had some really good bits, but others (like Pudding changing stances again or King Baum’s fake death) don’t rub me the right ay. Regardless, let’s hope we at least have an interesting bout with Mama!

Chapter Secrets 72 – Chapter 872

20 years and many more to come! It’s been almost 2 years that I’ve been doing chapter secrets and I’ll try to be there for the rest of the road!
